Holistic Assessment: Beyond Marks & Examinations

Every year, millions of Indian students are reduced to a three-digit number. That number determines their self-worth, their stream, their future and it captures almost none of what matters about who they are as learners. NEP 2020 calls this out directly, mandating a shift from ‘high-stakes summative testing’ to ‘regular and formative assessment’ that is ‘more competency-based.’ The mandate exists. The practice, in most schools, does not  yet.

The Cost of Assessment Orthodoxy

India’s examination system is among the most high-stakes in the world. A 2022 study by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences found that exam-related anxiety affects over 74% of secondary school students, with significant correlations to disengagement, school dropout, and mental health challenges. Meanwhile, traditional pen-and-paper tests measure a narrow band of learning: recall and reproduction. They systematically undervalue creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and social-emotional growth.

The CBSE’s shift to Competency-Based Questions in Board examinations from 2021 is a signal, not an endpoint. Schools that prepare teachers to assess holistically now will be ahead of every curriculum revision to come.

What Our Holistic Assessment Session Covers

NITYA’s session reframes assessment from gatekeeping to learning acceleration:

  • Formative vs Summative assessment: understanding the difference and designing both with intention, not habit
  • Portfolio-based assessment: how to document student growth across time, not just performance on a single day
  • Portfolio-based assessment: how to document student growth across time, not just performance on a single day
  • Rubric design: creating transparent, criteria-based tools that make assessment a conversation rather than a verdict
  • Peer and self-assessment strategies that build metacognition and learner ownership
  • 360-degree holistic report cards: assessing cognitive, social-emotional, creative, and physical development in an integrated way
